Windows 10 on Mobile: 10 Things IT Admins Need to Know
Giving IT organizations their first glimpse of a new class of mobile workstations based on next-generation Intel Xeon processors, Lenovo today unveiled a pair of ThinkPad P50 and P70 offerings that not only sport 64GB of DDR4 memory, but also can be configured with ultra high-definition (UHD) 4K displays.
Announced at the SIGGRAPH 2015 Conference and Exhibition, David Harris, worldwide product manager for Lenovo ThinkPads, says the 15.5-in ThinkPad P50 and 17-in. P70 mobile workstations will be among the first mobile workstations running Windows 10 to make use of Intel Skylake class processors.
Scheduled to ship in October, Harris says Lenovo is making use of two fans within a Lenovo FLEX Performance Cooling design to cool the CPUs and NVIDIA graphical processor unit (GPUs) needed to drive high-performance graphics applications. In addition, the workstations can be configured with as many as four storage devices to provide as much as a terabyte of SSD storage that plugs directly into a PCIe bus that is five times faster than using a SATA drive interface. In addition, the ThinkPad P70 comes with two Intel Thunderbolt 3 ports for faster external connectivity.
Priced starting at $1,599 for the P50 and $1,999 for the P70, Harris says Lenovo envisions both mobile workstations being used by engineers and other professionals who need access to high-performance applications outside the office. With a battery life expected to be in the range of four to five hours, Harris concedes that most of the usage of these mobile workstations will be within the reach of a power outlet.
The one thing that is for certain is that the willingness of organizations to hand these out to employees will be in direct proportion to the value of that employee to the business itself.
