The Impact of Mobility on the Enterprise

Looking to bring its platform for managing Apple devices closer in line to the way Apple sells and registers devices, JAMF Software this week released an upgrade to its Casper Suite of management software.

JAMF Software CTO Jason Wudi says version 9.7 of Casper Suite now supports enrollment of devices via the Apple Device Enrollment Program along with the ability to reassign applications acquired via the Apple Volume Purchase plan to other devices.

Wudi says Casper Suite has also been extended to add support for the Apple iBeacon indoor transmission system, which notifies IT administrators where Apple devices are located in a building.

In general, Wudi says that management of Apple devices based on the unique identity of each individual user continues to improve. As a result, it’s become much easier to personalize support.

Wudi notes that the growing adoption of software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications is having a downstream impact on acceptance of Apple devices in the enterprise. As organizations move to embrace Web applications, their dependency on Windows applications that run natively on PCs drops.

It may take awhile longer for Apple devices to reach complete parity with Windows systems inside the enterprise. But as more Apple iPhones and iPads find their way into the enterprise, resistance to Apple’s Mac desktops also begins to fall. The only question that remains after that is how best to manage all those devices.
