5 Essential Elements in Building an Agile Data Center

Not too long ago, the IT world was a simple place from a database perspective. The enterprise was dominated by relational databases that were primarily managed by database administrators (DBAs) that had deep expertise in databases built primarily by Oracle or IBM.

Today the database landscape is made of a panoply of database architectures that includes everything from document databases to new classes of distributed databases. Mastering tools for each instance of a database type is neither economically feasible nor, for that matter, even practical.

Aiming to give IT organizations a saner way to manage all that diversity, Blue Medora today unfurled a SelectStar software-as-a-service (SaaS) application through which a DBA can monitor instances of Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Oracle, DB2, MySQL, MongoDB, MariaDB, Amazon DynamoDB and Aurora databases running on Amazon Web Services (AWS) or VMware vSphere environments.

Blue Medora CTO Mike Kelly says that over time, Blue Medora will continue to expand the number and types of databases it supports.

“Our intention is to support every major database regardless of where it’s deployed,” said Kelly.

Kelly notes that SelectStar not only provides the means for monitoring multiple types of databases, it surfaces recommendations on how to run each type more effectively. Pricing for SelectStar starts at $30 per database instance.
