Ten Best Practices for Securing Sensitive Data in Hadoop

Actian today launched a free community edition of its SQL-compatible Big Data platform for Hadoop at the Strata + Hadoop World 2014 conference.

The Analytics Platform – Express Hadoop SQL Edition from Actian provides up to 500GB of storage and no limit on the number of nodes that can be configured.

Actian CTO Mike Hoskins says what makes the company’s approach to Hadoop different is that it provides access to a SQL engine that runs natively on top of Hadoop versus requiring IT organizations to move data from Hadoop into another database system.

As familiarity with Hadoop continues to grow in the enterprise, IT organizations are generally deploying Hadoop along two different paths. The first is known as a data lake, where raw data stored in Hadoop is used to feed external processing engines that typically reside in a data warehouse that an analytics application can then access.

The second path involves using Hadoop as a platform where the processing runs natively on Hadoop. Hoskins says that while the initial usage of Hadoop has been to feed data to other data warehouse systems, it won’t be much longer before Hadoop fully emerges as a platform in its own right.

Of course, Actian isn’t the only vendor that enables SQL queries to run against Hadoop. But Hoskins says that by making a community edition available, more IT organizations will come to appreciate that it is the fastest.
