Docker containers will revolutionize virtualization

Docker turns the current model of virtualization on its head with a container-based approach. The bulk of current data center virtualization deployments leverage a traditional hypervisor virtual machine model. In the hypervisor model, each VM needs its own operating system and the hypervisor itself sits on top of a host operating system. In contrast, Docker sits directly on the host operating system and only virtualizes the required application bits into the container. Ben Golub, CEO of Docker Inc., recently conducted a video interview with eWEEK in which he detailed the disruption that his company represents to the enterprise virtualization space. Docker is freely available today and is currently at its 0.7 release with support for multiple Linux distributions.

Open source technology plays a key role in the modern world, powering a wide range of innovations from handheld devices to the world's most powerful supercomputers and the cloud. Open source isn't a meaningless marketing term, rather, it is defined by a number of a key characteristics. The first and most important is the license under which the code is made available. A number of open source licenses are currently in use, with the key factor being availability of code that is open and accessible. The basic idea behind open source communities is that with open code, contributions can be made from a broader community and there is less risk from single vendor lock-in.

The promise of open source is that the open nature and broader contribution base potential can lead to a faster rate of innovation than closed source proprietary technology. A lot of actively developed open source projects are active today in every sector of enterprise and consumer technology. In this slideshow, we take a look at some of the hottest up-and-coming open source projects of interest to the enterprise from around the world.
