Machine to Machine communication (M2M) really is the next big thing. Linking almost anything to anything else – the other name for the category is the “Internet of Things” – cheaply and wirelessly, opens almost endless possibilities.

SAP commissioned Harris Interactive to survey IT decision makers. The results, which were released at the beginning of May, show how disruptive M2M may be: Thirty percent of those surveyed think that smart and intelligent cities will be the most important outcome of M2M deployments. Other uses, with outcomes and ramifications just as great, are possible in industry, telecommunications and other realms. More simply put, M2M is the fabric with which specific services, which will be huge in their own right, will be built. Home automation is a good example.

Such a big change requires millions of developments and inventions. Here are the latest developments from the M2M sector.
