‘Accelerating Your Development as a Leader’ Excerpt

From this excerpt from Robert Barner’s book, managers get recommendations and tools they can use to help nurture team members’ career development goals and reduce the amount of time it takes to achieve those goals.

In his book “Accelerating Your Development as a Leader: A Guide for Leaders and their Managers,” Robert Barner provides an invaluable resource for management coaches and HR personnel in the pursuit of both developing successful leaders and broadening team member leadership roles.

This excerpt comes from Chapter 1 of the “Leader’s Guide” section, entitled “The Business Case for Accelerated Development.” From this chapter, managers get recommendations and tools they can use to help nurture team members’ career development goals and reduce the amount of time it takes to achieve those goals.

Barner elaborates on four reasons why accelerated development should be a manager’s top priority:

    1. Time, both yours and that of your team members, is too precious to waste.

    2. Your team is a reflection of your own leadership abilities.

    3. Benefits lie in making use of organizational white space—areas outside your immediate work teams where employees can find growth opportunities.

    4. Most organizations can’t afford to live with wasteful and drawn-out professional development cycles.
