Fibre Channel and Ethernet may be battling it out over 8 and 10 Gbps solutions, but Infiniband is ready to deliver more than four times that throughput for data centers that can afford it.

Voltaire Ltd. recently announced the new Grid Director 4000 line of switches that clocks in at 40 Gbps with densities as high as 36 ports.

The company has been able to pack that performance into a relatively small frame: a 1 U chassis that is only 15 inches deep and weighs in at 16.9 pounds. It also features a configurable air-flow design that draws only 10 watts per port with redundant AC or DC power options.

The software management system includes both device and subnet management with adaptive routing and congestion capability designed to maintain unified fabric capability in mixed loads of cluster, storage and network traffic. There is also in-band and out-of-band remote access.

The unit is priced at $400 per port with shipments beginning in December.
