Forget 4G or even 8G Fibre Channel. The electronic housing industry is already looking forward to 17G and 25G data rates.
Schott Electronic Packaging has come out with a hermetic Transistor Outline (TO) that the company says supports 17 Gbps Fibre Channel applications with an eye toward propelling the format into advanced data-transmission networks.
The TO Plus unit supports up to six pins, with higher frequency and DC electrical ports that eliminate the need for complex hybrid packages that are usually required to accommodate the necessary electronics for high-bandwidth operation.
The device is being tested by several of Schott's clients to verify the unit's suitability for both 17G and 25G operations. Results are expected this fall.
