Small businesses looking for a low-cost, easily deployed gigabit switch solution might want to check out a pair of new devices from 3Com.
The OfficeConnect Managed Gigabit PoE switch is a 10-port desktop model priced at less than $500. The Baseline 2900 Plus is a rackmount device available in 16-, 24- and 48-port configurations, with a 24-port PoE option as well.
Both units offer three key features that the company sees as crucial to smaller infrastructures looking to branch into advanced services. First, they provide gigabit and 10.100 Ethernet for computers of varying ages. They also sport voice-readiness, offering seamless conversion to universal communications. And they sport enterprise-grade GUIs, allowing managers to control individual ports and security functions.
3Com isn't the first vendor to realize that small businesses need advanced networking, too. Its job now is to leverage that demand to regain its market share lost to Cisco and others.
