More and more software firms are discovering the benefits of releasing their systems on appliances, offering improved performance and easier installation and integration for enterprise customers.

The latest is infrastructure software specialist TIBCO, which unveiled the TIBCO Messaging Appliance P-7500 this week. The device incorporates the company's Rendezvous software in a hardware design that features field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) that offer a 10-fold increase in messaging volume and data flow, even while it cuts latency in half.

The appliance is built to fit in a standard 4U server enclosure and is available in four- or eight-port 1 GbE configurations, or in a two-port 10 GbE design.

Company execs say the appliance model could also find its way to other TIBCO products relatively soon, including integration software, process management and business intelligence.
