Microsoft's new "Open Specifications Promise," released earlier this week, is the latest in the company's efforts to work with the open source movement -- not to mention an acknowledgment of its staying power in the software market.

Redmond is doing exactly what columnist Neil McAllister has advised the open source community as a whole to do. In a Computerworld New Zealand piece, he urges the extremists among them to set aside their more "religious" arguments against the Redmond and learn to get along.

After all, Microsoft won't be going anywhere anytime soon.
