Not that there was really any doubt, but Open Source Initiative President Michael Tiemann announced on Friday that GPL v3 and LGPL v3 have been ratified as OSI-approved licenses.

As Computer Business Review's Matthew Aslett points out, it's estimated that three-fourths of open source projects are released under the GPL, so "it might seem strange that the OSI even had to think about it." However, OSI and the Free Software Foundation aren't always on the same page. FSF founder Richard Stallman continually distinguishes free software from open source software.
