Informatica Offers Free Trial of Big Data Edition for Cloudera, Hortonworks Hadoop

If you’re tinkering with Cloudera and Hortonworks Hadoop distributions in a sandbox, you can now experiment with Informatica’s Big Data Edition for free.

Informatica announced Wednesday that its Big Data Edition will now come pre-installed on these distributions. You can also download the 60-day trial from Informatica’s Marketplace.

The trial version can run inside a one-node Hadoop cluster. It uses a GUI-driven approach to integration, so you can build and execute ETL and data integration natively on Hadoop for Big Data analytics, without having to write code.

The solution includes hundreds of pre-built transforms and connectors for both structured and unstructured Hadoop data. It also supports data profiling, parsing, transforming and cleansing.

Informatica has also packaged sample data and mappings, as well as documentation and videos. Your work won’t be lost, either, if you decide to buy: Any mappings you develop can be moved to a Hadoop node running Big Data Edition.

While the trial is only available on Cloudera and Hortonworks, the full Informatica Big Data Edition can also support MapR and Pivotal Hadoop distributions, according to Scott Hedrick, who leads Informatica’s Big Data partner ecosystem.

    The Trouble with Tribble Applications

Remember the Tribbles from Star Trek? They were so fluffy, soothing, and absolutely no problem … until they overran the ship and ate the grain supply.

Cloud applications aren’t so different from tribbles, it seems. They’re easy and soothing, but soon the integration needs are overrunning IT, writes Hollis Tibbetts, a freelance technology commentator and evangelist & software technology director at Dell’s Global Software Group.

    Big Data

“In an era where the concept of ‘instant gratification’ is increasingly being applied to applications and data storage (thanks to SaaS and Cloud), increasingly individuals, small groups, departments and line of business owners are swiping their credit cards and getting ‘instant’ business applications – without regard for the downstream consequences – such as Integration, Business Intelligence, security, compliance and backup/recovery, …” writes Tibbetts. “Meanwhile, IT continues to be held responsible for many of the implications resulting from this widespread proliferation.”

Tibbetts cites a recent study by Netskope, which found that IT seriously miscalculates the number of cloud applications within the organization.  IT professionals typically estimate 40 to 50 cloud apps are in use, when the actual number is closer to 400 cloud applications.

Most of the eBizQ article explores the problems these “application tribbles” can create, but a portion is devoted to promoting Dell Boomi’s integration solution.

    Upcoming Webinars for Sept. 15-19

A New Contract with IT: Get us the Data,” 4 p.m., EDT Tuesday, Sept. 16. Bloor Group analyst William McKnight will discuss how IT’s primary role is shifting from software management to delivering data. Cisco’s David Besemer will also discuss how data virtualization can support this new IT role and provide a briefing on Cisco’s data virtualization solution.

APIs and the Path to Enterprise Digital Transformation,” 1-2 p.m., EDT, or 10- 11 a.m., PDT, Wednesday, Sept. 17. Forrester Researcher Randy Heffner will discuss the major categories of APIs, strategies for rolling out an API program and, as the title suggests, the role of APIs in the “emerging digital value chain.” He’ll be joined by the CTO of SOA Software, which is sponsoring this webinar.

How to Make Hybrid Cloud Real for the Enterprise.” 1-2 p.m., EDT, or 10- 11 a.m., PDT, Wednesday, Sept. 17. Gigaom Founder Paul Miller will lead a panel discussion on building, managing and controlling an enterprise-class hybrid cloud. Gigaom cites research that found that 76 percent of IT decision makers say hybrid clouds will be a core part of their cloud strategy moving forward. That’s because hybrid clouds support application integration, workload migration and movement, benchmarking and policy-based governance.

Miller will be joined by the VP/CTO of Information Technology at the Baylor College of Medicine and by David Cope, executive VP of Corporate Development and CMO of CliQr, which is sponsoring the event.

Data Quality and the Up Sides of Data Governance,” 3 p.m., ET, Thursday, Sept. 18. Data quality and governance are still major problem points for many organizations. If you’re struggling to address data quality and data governance, tune in for this live discussion on this week’s DM Radio, hosted by Eric Kavanagh of Information Management.
