The largest software company worldwide, among consumers and businesses, Microsoft was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1975. Since then, the company has grown to corner the software market with its Windows server and desktop operating systems and the applications associated with those systems, but Microsoft's success has not been without pain -- most notably, perhaps, its antitrust litigation in both Europe and in the U.S. Its Office productivity suite and its Internet Explorer Web browser are also very popular.
