Mergers and Acquisitions

Consolidation of companies can happen in several ways. In simple terms, a merger occurs when two companies that are equal mutually decide to form one entity. An acquisition, be it hostile (one-sided decision) or friendly (mutual decision), occurs when a larger company purchases the shares of a smaller company in exchange for cash. Some prominent examples include Google's purchase of YouTube, Sun Microsystems' acquisition of MySQL, and Microsoft's 2008 attempt to buy Yahoo.
