Security metrics take a statistical look at how a system or computer on that system is faring in the battle to stay safe. Computer security is really a series of individual trials: Attempts by hackers to break into the system, the number of viruses received and quarantined, etc. The stability of the infrastructure and how it can be fine-tuned is deduced by the metrics gathered. It's not just pass/fail: Careful study of security metrics can make measures that were ultimately successful operate even more efficiently.
