Cellular platforms are circular areas of coverage surrounding elevated transmission gear used to transmit voice and data signals. Increasingly, cellular is being used to distribute data in the form of Web content and various types of messaging. Cellular platforms compete and cooperate with Wi-Fi and 4G - WiMax now and Long-Term Evolution later - offer ways to cut costs and free capacity. If the proposed purchase of Alltel by Verizon closes, the big four U.S. carriers will be Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint. �
