NAS, short for Network-Attached Storage, is a dedicated computer device connected to a network that has the sole purpose of storing and serving up data to other devices on the network. NAS is a competitive approach to storage-area networks (SANs). While NAS uses TCP/IP addresses, SAN uses Fibre Channel. NAS has few distance limitations and is easily deployed and maintained. Though performance is dependent on the allocated memory and bandwidth, NAS can offer improved speed because they are dedicated devices.
