APIs, or application programming interfaces, provide applications the ability to call for resources through an operating system, library or services. APIs are sets of declarations of the procedures or functions available to applications to access disk storage, processing cycles and other computing resources mastered by the OS. Language-independent APIs, which can be accessed by any number of programming languages, are broadly preferred over language-dependent APIs.
