Search engines have become the home page for most Internet users. Search engines scan, or crawl, the entire Internet and index the information they find at massive data centers, ranking pages for relevance and quality. Search engine companies fund themselves primarily by serving advertisements on search results pages, based on the term searched upon. Google dominates the search engine market, but Microsoft, Yahoo and other niche players are jockeying for position in the multi-billion-dollar market.
