An operating system is a program by which other programs, or applications, make requests for resources such as processing cycles and storage. Computers typically boot to their OS at startup, after which users launch applications through a user interface, or UI. The leading operating system for PCs is Microsoft Windows, although Linux and the Mac OS are making some headway in certain markets. Servers, storage networks and other powerful computing systems have specialized operating systems, often based on Unix.
