Ethernet

Introduced in the 1980s, Ethernet remains the most common networking standard for Local-Area Networks (LANS). Designated as IEEE 802.3, Ethernet is a frame-based networking platform that defines numerous signaling and wiring standards. Current Ethernet LANs typically employ twisted-pair cables to client systems and fiber-optics for backbone connections. Because of its prevalence in LANs, Ethernet is also the basis for area-wide WANs via Metro Ethernet, and high-speed 10g Ethernet is competing in the data center.
