Individual computers can speak to each other and to shared resources over networks, which can be as simple as two linked PCs or as complex as the Internet. Computers communicate to each other via protocols, such as TCP/IP, over wired or wireless connections. Even the simplest LANs typically contain servers, machines devoted to networking functions, and networking hardware that route data traffic to the desired destination. Security is a critical aspect of network design as more users need to log on from various locations.
