Powerful enterprise software is often leased for use by a number of staff members, or seats, instead of being purchased. These software-licensing agreements include maintenance, troubleshooting and updates, so IT does not have to learn the guts of complicated software. However, a large percentage of software licenses, which can costs thousands of dollars per seat, go unused for years. Software-as-a-service, with applications delivered over the Web, is an emerging alternative to traditional software licensing.
