Software-as-a-Service, or SaaS, is an increasingly popular purchasing model in which businesses pay for seats of an application hosted and maintained by the vendor. SaaS has gained more traction than its predecessor, ASP, as Web-based applications have become more robust and smaller shops demand the functionality of powerful enterprise software applications. Companies that employ SaaS should be ready to adapt business processes to the software they buy without a lot of customization. CRM and sales-force automation are leading SaaS categories.
