Data mining, as you might expect, is the process of sorting through enormous stores of data and picking out relevant information. Vendors propose all sorts of models for determining which data is relevant, ranging from user tracking to predicative analysis. Data mining is essential to most database-driven business applications, from business intelligence to financial analysis. Internet traffic also is a rich source of data to be mined, raising numerous privacy questions.
