Database software, often referred to as relational database management systems (RDBMSs), had long been dominated by expensive, powerful packages from Oracle, Microsoft and Sybase. In recent years, open source alternatives to proprietary RDBMS have taken market share and been a key factor in the growth of the software-as-a-service marketplace. Database software packages typically can be integrated with most applications, and there's a growing market for security and database-performance optimization tools.
