E-mail Servers

In technical terms, an "e-mail server" is a piece of software - also called a mail transfer agent (MTA) or SMTP daemon -- that sends and receives e-mail, typically running on commodity server hardware. In business, "e-mail server" often describes advanced messaging and calendaring software, such as Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes, that centrally manages, secures and stores messaging within an organization. As messaging-retention needs rise, hosted mail services, such as Postini, have gained popularity.
