Application servers deliver software's functions, typically through the HTTP protocol, to client systems, either through a closed network or the Internet. Application servers tend to interface with databases and server-side dynamic content. Centralizing business logic on an application server, while employing a Web server to deliver rendered pages to client systems, allows for scalability and ease of deployment. Application servers can run on a variety of platforms; some use APIs to become operating system-independent.
