It doesn't necessarily take long for a technology to be classified as legacy, but that designation includes a huge number of technologies that are mission-critical. Mainframes, for instance, contain well over three-quarters of the world's data and run the most demanding applications. Integration with newer platforms and technologies will involve rewriting, replacing, or migrating. Issues with legacy integration include retaining staff experienced with the technology, data silos and lack of vendor support.
