ROI used to mean just financial paybacks from IT investments, but it's come to encompass intangible benefits as well. These non-financial benefits might include increased customer satisfaction, more productive workers or data that's more accurate and available faster. Some managers even believe these intangibles are more important, though they can be harder to measure. For many IT projects, their value might not appear immediately, but is spread out over a period of time. That has to be taken into account for ROI as well.
