Configuration management describes IT's systems and practices for tracking the configuration of all its systems, from the current word processor on client laptops to the latest RDBMS upgrade in the data center. Most large businesses employ configuration-management software that gives IT pros a rolled-up view of systems, so that they can avoid compatibility issues when rolling out an upgrade, patch or new installation. Configuration-management systems also track network data, such as system IP address.
