Second Life Creates First-Class Networking for IBM'ers
Fast Company on February 01, 2007
IBM has been one of the biggest boosters of the idea of leveraging online virtual communities like Second Life for business benefit. In this brief Q&A (just a three-paragraph answer to a single question), the director of Big Blue's Center for Advanced Learning describes how the company uses Second Life to help its interns in China quickly learn about company culture and to network in a way that otherwise wouldn’t be possible, all via a "very low-cost medium." In the U.S., the company is creating a Second Life "mentoring community" to help bring together members of its multigenerational workforce. Employees "seem pleased to be meeting this way," says the director, who is pictured here as a kilt-clad avatar.
