Despite Cutting 5,000 Jobs, Sprint Nextel Hikes WiMax Investment
GigaOM on January 15, 2007
The importance that at least one major company, Sprint Nextel, is putting on WiMax is clear. The company, which has identified the platform as the way it will provide nascent 4G service, is cutting 5,000 jobs. Despite this, Sprint Nextel is increasing the amount of money it will spend on WiMax development this year. The company says it will spend $1.1 billion on WiMax 4G services in 2007, divided between $300 million on startup services and $800 million on WiMax-related capital expenditures. The company also says it will spend $2 billion in 2008.
