Seeking Real Numbers for Second Life
Corante on December 12, 2006
This skeptical post about Second Life, which has appeared elsewhere in the blogosphere, has attracted quite a bit of attention, as evidenced by the lengthy string of reader comments that follow it. Blogger Clay Shirky contends that Second Life greatly inflates its user numbers, which it says are approaching the 2 million mark. The site counts first-time users who give Second Life a try and then never return. He refers to the site as a "Try Me" virus, with a tremendous ability to attract folks — thanks to all of the publicity — but little ability to retain them. He refers to earlier, unsuccessful experiments in 3D technology, which never seem to get mentioned in all of the breathless reports about Second Life.
