IBM Sees Real Opportunities in Virtual World
ZDNet on December 12, 2006
IBM's VP of technical strategy and innovation is comparing Big Blue's just-announced initiative to promote virtual reality and similar technologies to its earlier efforts to push the Linux operating system and grid computing. IBM has an island modeled after its famous Almaden Research Center in Second Life, the online community where participants create avatars to interact with other avatars and purchase virtual goods and services, and it plans to open a dozen more Second Life sites. IBM CEO Sam Palmisano recently hosted a business meeting there, and the company reportedly has about 1,000 employees who are Second Life participants. Dell and Sun are among other tech companies that have conducted meetings in Second Life. IBM believes that virtual reality presents opportunities for commerce, conferences and training.
