Google: No Panacea for Intranet Search

When intranet searches repeatedly fail, employees often ask, "Why can't we just get Google?" But the main reasons for Google's success have little to do with technology (although Google's is good). Reason number one: The sites that get found have spent a lot of effort to get found — by desired visitors, that is. In addition, counting links is a key part of Google's methodology, and few intranet contributors take the trouble to include relevant links in their content.
