Censorship and Enterprise 2.0
ZDNet on August 20, 2006
This blog post raises an interesting point that — unlike many issues associated with the use of so-called Web 2.0 technologies within the enterprise — we haven't seen addressed much elsewhere. In the enterprise, there are going to be instances where user-generated content must be removed because it's inappropriate, inaccurate or even illegal. Though the concept of selective censorship is anathema to the broader Web 2.0 world, the blogger says, it is entirely appropriate in an internal corporate setting. Businesses must ask themselves the simple question of whether the benefits of using such technologies outweigh the risks. More importantly, how can companies maintain appropriate levels of control without stifling the creativity and collaboration these tools are designed to encourage? He includes some nice links further exploring the topic, including one to a piece on the top 10 management fears associated with Web 2.0.
