Six Strategies for Successful IT Projects

A recent Accenture survey contains a pretty grim statistic: Just 29 percent of IT projects are considered successful. Not too surprising, perhaps, considering that the average cost overrun is 56 percent and the typical delay is 84 percent. This columnist, the managing director of Cerulean Associates, lists six principles that should help companies improve the success rates of their projects. Among them: Divide large projects into simpler, smaller phases, then delineate each phase by its ability to provide a quick and direct business benefit. Allow the project leader to devote as much attention to managing "soft" people issues as to metrics and reporting.
