AOL Users Easily Identified Through Search Data
International Herald Tribune on August 09, 2006
It's a small percentage of Internet searchers who ever think about the fact that the Net isn't as anonymous as it may seem. Now that AOL has mistakenly posted and lost control of a file containing the search records of 657,000 Americans (over 20 million searches), the wake-up call is here. This article contains an interview with one AOL user, who was tracked down by the reporter through her searches. She and the other users who can be identified through their searches may find it's just the beginning of the story as marketers, law enforcement agents and curious onlookers examine the data.
