VeriSign Faces Class Action Suit over SSL Certificates
internetnews.com on May 19, 2006
The leading SSL certificate provider, VeriSign, will face possible liabilities of $200 million in a class action suit being brought in California Superior Court. At issue is whether the company misled customers into purchasing Secure Site Pro, instead of Secure Site, at a premium of $546, by claiming that the professional version of the product enhanced encryption significantly. The court will examine the question of whether export restrictions for browser security that were lifted in 2000 made VeriSign's SSL certificate encryption claims inaccurate.
