Technology is Throwing Our Work-Life Balance out of Whack
ITBusiness.ca on April 13, 2006
This columnist makes the case that technology, rather than making our lives easier and more leisurely, has done exactly the opposite. He cites the personal experience of falling asleep at his PC while dialed into his office working on a project and receiving late-night e-mails from friends who have trouble making time for personal correspondence. A friend who travels a lot on business felt compelled to get a Webcam for his laptop to spend more (virtual) time with his young daughter. Others seem to be having similar experiences, based on the results of a survey conducted for Day-Timers. It found that people are completing less of their daily work than they did a decade ago, despite the fact that they spend far more time at the PC. Fifty-one percent of respondents called themselves "extremely" or "very" productive, down from 83 percent in 1994.
