Evolution from 3G to 4G and Beyond (5G)
DaniWeb on November 27, 2005
This is a worthwhile article, though the writing is a bit rough. It begins with thumbnail descriptions of 1G, 2G, 3G and 4G and introduces the idea of 5G. The next section compares 3G to 4G. 3G is based on a number of access technologies, including Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA), Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SDMA). 4G, on the other hand, is much simpler: It is based on Internet protocol and will be rolled out using IP version 6 (IPv6), a new addressing scheme that is gradually working its way into the telecommunications infrastructure. The paper also takes a deeper look at how 4G works, defining such terms as OFDM, Multi-Carrier Code Division Multiple Access (MS-CDMA) and Large Area Synchronized Code Division Multiple Access (LAS-CDMA).
