Energy Consumption

Resource Center
Today’s energy concerns go far beyond the gas tank. The energy consumed by company data center servers and related infrastructure equipment has doubled from 2000 to 2005 and continues to rise.

The spike in energy consumption by IT hardware is driven by a number of factors: increased use of the Internet; video, music and other online applications on demand; and VoIP telephony. The highest jump in power consumption comes from an increase in low-end servers, due to trends such as the move to Linux and distributed platforms.

Power conservation strategies include server virtualization software and improved cooling methods.
