IT governance is a spin-off from corporate governance and deals primarily with the connection between business focus and the IT management of an organization.

The primary goals for IT governance are to assure that IT investments generate business value and to mitigate the risks associated with IT. Governance requires IT-related matters are given a higher priority within the organization and strategic IT decisions become the purview of the corporate board, instead of just the CIO or IT management.
