    Twenty IT Certifications Projected to Make Pay Gains in 2014

    In Foote Partners’ final quarterly update to its 2013 IT Skills Demand and Pay Trends Report, data for 348 noncertified IT skills and 293 IT certifications was analyzed. Both skill groups collectively showed pay gains during this quarter.

    The following is a list of IT certifications earning workers above average pay premiums right now, having been growing at above average rates in 2013. Foote Partners believes these are likely to continue to gaining market value over the next three to six months.

    Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC)

    CRISC is the most current and rigorous assessment available to evaluate the risk management proficiency of IT professionals and other employees within an enterprise or financial institute, according to ISACA. Employers hire CRISCs for their understanding of IT risk and its impacts, their ability to develop risk mitigation plans, and to help establish a common perspective in the organization toward IT risk.

    CWNP Certified Wireless Security Professional

    To become a Certified Wireless Security Professional, you must pass two exams. The certification signals that the holder is skilled in securing enterprise Wi-Fi networks.

    CWNP Certified Wireless Network Expert

    The Certified Wireless Network Expert is the final segment of the larger CWNP program. The credential signals that the holder is highly skilled in administration, installation, configuration, troubleshooting and design in wireless network systems. The requirements include three years of documented experience.

    GIAC Certified Forensics Analyst (GCFA)

    The GIAC Certified Forensics Analyst (GCFA) certifies that “candidates have the knowledge, skills, and ability to conduct formal incident investigations and handle advanced incident handling scenarios, including internal and external data breach intrusions, advanced persistent threats, anti-forensic techniques used by attackers, and complex digital forensic cases,” according to the Global Information Assurance Certification organization. The certification requires successful completion of one exam.

    GIAC Certified Intrusion Analyst (GCIA)

    The GIAC Certified Intrusion Analyst (GCIA) certifies that holders “have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to configure and monitor intrusion detection systems, and to read, interpret, and analyze network traffic and related log files,” according to the Global Information Assurance Certification organization. The certification requires successful completion of one exam.

    HP  Accredited Solutions Expert (ASE – all)

    Building on the HP Accredited Integration Specialist (AIS) and Accredited Technical Professional (ATP) certifications, the Accredited Solutions Expert (ASE) is available in a long list of focus areas, including Project & Portfolio Management v9, Server Automation v9, Software for Cloud Management v1 and Business Service Management v9.

    HP Master Accredited Solutions Expert (MASE – all)

    The HP Master Accredited Solutions Expert (MASE) is the highest level in the HP ExpertOne Software Certification path, building on the Accredited Integration Specialist (AIS), Accredited Technical Professional (ATP) and Accredited Solutions Expert (ASE) certifications.

    HP Master Accredited Systems Engineer (Master ASE)

    The HP Master Accredited Systems Engineer (Master ASE) is available in a number of areas. For example, the Master Accredited Systems Engineer – Wireless Networks Implemented V1 certification signals “to employers that you possess the highest levels of skill, including master-engineer ability to successfully plan, design, implement and troubleshoot enterprise level HP wireless networks, including how to integrate into the existing wired infrastructure. It also addresses CIO’s number one concern with regard to wireless networks – security,” according to HP.

    Information Systems Security Engineering Professional (ISSEP/CISSP)

    According to the (ISC)2 organization, the ISSEP-CISSP concentration was developed with the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA). The Information Systems Security Engineering Professional concentration “is the guide for incorporating security into projects, applications, business processes, and all information systems.” To earn the ISSEP, you must successfully pass one exam while holding a CISSP credential in good standing.

    Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA)

    If you already hold one of the four Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA) certifications, good for you. You’ve worked hard and your certification will remain in good standing. However, the certification is being retired by Microsoft, as of December 31, 2013. The company is reevaluating the “certification and training needs of the industry to determine what the right certification is for the pinnacle of our program.”

    Like the Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA) certification, the Microsoft Certified Solutions Master (MCSM) certification is being retired by Microsoft, as of December 31, 2013. If you hold this cert, it will remain in good standing.     Open Group Certified Architect (Open CA)

    The Open Group Certified Architect (Open CA) certification aims to be just that: open. The program is vendor neutral and portable, and requires candidates to display their skills and experience working on architecture-related projects. The certification is expanding, according to The Open Group: “The Open CA program currently focuses on IT. However, the architecture profession is constantly evolving and to reflect this, The Open Group will incorporate dedicated Business Architecture and Enterprise Architecture streams into the Open CA program in the near future. Therefore, applicants will be able to become an Open CA in: It Architecture, Business Architecture, Enterprise Architecture.”

    Open Group Master Architect (Open CA)

    The Open Group Master Architect certification is level 2 of the Certified IT Architect program from The Open Group. Applications are reviewed by an Open Group board and an interview is conducted.

    Oracle Certified Expert MySQL 5.1 Cluster Database Administrator

    “The typical job role for this candidate,” explains Oracle, “is maintaining and performing continuous service on one or more MySQL Cluster setups, in cooperation with users and developers. Certified individuals understand the underlying logic and influence of hardware components in a Cluster system, and are able to provide the necessary degree of security and performance throughout the system.” You must hold either the Oracle Certified Professional, MySQL 5 Database Administrator or the Sun Certified MySQL Database Administrator certification, and successfully pass one exam to earn this certification.

    Oracle Certified Professional MySQL 5 Database Administrator

    “The typical job role of a MySQL DBA,” explains Oracle, “is in setting up, managing and optimizing one or more MySQL servers in an organization, often helping a team of one or more users and programmers of MySQL products.” You must pass two exams to earn this certification.

    Oracle DB Administrator Certified Master

    The Oracle DB Administrator Certified Master certification is the highest attainable credential in the Oracle certification program. Senior database professionals who have demonstrated on-the-job experience and have completed a series of courses and exams may reach the level of Certified Master.

    PMI Risk Management Professional

    In the project management community, the PMI Risk Management Professional certification is one of the most recognized. It “fills the need for a specialist role in project risk management,” according to the Project Management Institute.

    Program Management Professional (PgMP)

    Experienced project managers often pursue the Program Management Professional (PgMP) certification. “Credential holders,” says the Project Management Institute, “oversee the success of a program, grouping related projects together to realize organizational benefits not available if they were managed separately. It’s the perfect fit if you define projects, assign project managers and oversee programs.” The requirements for application include four years of project management experience and four years of program management experience.

    Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA)

    A Red Hat Certified Architect (RHCA) has attained the highest level in Red Hat’s certification program. In order to earn the cert, applicants must successfully complete a number of other Red Hat certs.

    Teradata 12 Certified Enterprise Architect

    While the Teradata 12 certification exams, including for the Teradata 12 Certified Enterprise Architect certification, will be offered through September 2014, after that date the exams will be discontinued. Holders of the certifications will retain them after that date. Teradata encourages interested candidates to examine the Teradata 14 Certification Track going forward.
