With Earth Day upon us, a lot of thoughts naturally turn to all the issues associated with green IT. But a recent Gabriel Consulting Group survey of close to 200 data center managers and staff responsible for X86-class servers suggests that IT organizations still consider power consumption secondary to performance.
Unfortunately for IT vendors, most respondents could not clearly distinguish one vendor over another in terms of their green IT efficiencies, which suggests either more work needs to be done or customers simply aren’t getting the message.
Perhaps as the gap between IT organizations and those who run facilities continues to close, green IT will rise in importance. But even then, the issue is likely to be more closely tied to saving green dollars than to how green the environment might actually become.
