When it comes to saving money on IT, there’s a tendency to focus on mitigating the symptoms rather than curing the actual disease.

In the case of IT, the symptoms are the proliferation of servers and storage systems. The actual disease is all the applications that the IT organization is trying to support.

A new survey from Forrester Consulting of 208 global IT organizations, commissioned on behalf of Hewlett-Packard, finds that IT organizations are finally turning their attention to the actual disease that plagues them -- the number of redundant and obsolete applications they need to support.

To modernize their application portfolios, IT organizations need to overcome not only technology issues, but a plethora of budgetary and internal political issues. But for those organizations that can successfully modernize their application portfolio, the one-time payoff in reduced infrastructure costs is nothing compared to the gains in IT operational efficiency that will continue to deliver returns on the initial investment required for years to come.
