It is important to consider how vendors are reacting to, or are planning to react to, emerging storage concerns. For example, a number of decision makers have told Info-Tech that they will be looking at how consolidated storage will support future deployments of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).
In larger-scale deployments, shared storage plays a critical role in the performance, availability and deployment flexibility of virtual desktops. VDI also presents unique challenges to storage infrastructure. For example, “boot storms,” where multiple VDI sessions are initiated simultaneous (as when everyone starts up their desktops in the morning), are particularly taxing on shared storage. Several vendors have recently introduced new or extended features (particularly in the area of read/write caching and deduplication) to support larger-scale VDI deployment in the enterprise.
